This unit focuses on accuracy in pronunciation. In English, sometimes a difference in pronunciation can lead to a difference in meaning. Our pronunciation of the sounds of a second languange in often influenced by similar sounds in our home language. When people speak a languange in a context, slight, diffenrences in pronunciaton do not matter, because the context or situation makes the meaning clear. However, somtimes ambiguity (the possibility of more than one meaning) can arise, leading to misunderstanding or even emberrassment. The activities in this unit address pronunciation problems arising from different vowels, words stress and words containing silent letters.
Accuracy refers to how correct learners' use of the language system is, including their use of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Accuracy is often compared to fluency when we talk about a learner's level of speaking or writing.
Example
A learner might be fluent (make their meaning clear) but not accurate (make a lot of mistakes).
In the classroom Language manipulation activities can help develop accuracy. These include controlled practice, drills, the study and application of grammar rules, and activities that help students to 'notice' their own mistakes.
